Kingsport #33

The sight of Kenny Wilkes in Kingsport scared Barbara to death. It had been two days since that man had darkened her door and she still didn’t know how he’d been able to track her down. She’d left him in the middle of the night while he was black out drunk. It was the first chance she’d had in years to escape him, so she took it. On her way to the bus depot, she happened to pick up a magazine which extolled the virtues of Kingsport along with its richest residents. Ever the chancer, Barbara knew that if she could work for the Montgomery family, she would be able to sleep with Charles Montgomery, IV, become his mistress, and bear his child. That was her plan. Everything was going to plan until Kenny Wilkes arrived with his dirty fingernails, unkempt hair, and breath smelling of cheap beer and even cheaper cigarettes. In another life, Kenny had been enough. In this life, he was everything Barbara loathed: He was free of ambition with no drive to better himself. On top of that, her mother had forced Barbara to marry Kenny when she was fifteen. Some people whispered Barbara’s mother (who was always in and out of jail) sold her daughter for six hundred dollars, a steady supply of pills, and a carton of cigarettes to a man who was forty years her senior. Barbara knew it was true; she wouldn’t admit it to anyone.

As Barbara sorted Alison Farrell Montgomery’s mail and invitations at her desk at the Montgomery Estate, Barbara did everything in her power to remain cool and collected. However, her thoughts kept going back to the man who was currently in her apartment and refusing to leave because he was her husband.

Husband.

The word alone made Barbara want to vomit. That man was her abuser. Her jailer. Her albatross. Barbara associated husbands with lithe, fit, beautiful men from romantic comedies, not extras from Deliverance.

“Barbara,” called Dane Hurley. “Ada is on her lunch break and I need for you to bring a lunch tray to the library.”

“But I’m…”

“Now,” Dane said firmly as he walked out of the room.

Barbara sighed, pulled herself together, collected the tray, and heaved it through the servant’s quarters to the glorious library. Even though she’d been forced to drop out of high school the semester before graduation by Kenny because “a woman’s place is two steps behind me”, Barbara loved books. Reading was her only escape from a world devoid of life, color, joy, and happiness. That was why she risked being in the library the day Ada warned her about getting above herself because she felt at peace for the first time in her life. First Kenny, now Ada. If it weren’t for other people, thought Barbara, she would be happy.

As she knocked on the door and walked into the library, Barbara nearly tripped when she saw Charles Montgomery, IV sitting near one of the large windows smoking a cigar. He looked up to see Barbara lingering in the doorway. “What do we have here?” he asked, quickly.

“Your lunch, Mr. Montgomery.” Barbara walked his lunch tray to the well-laid table near the fireplace.

Charles strode over to the table, picked up the silver dome, and eyed the lunch of grilled salmon, rustic vegetables, and a baked potato. “I don’t want this. Chef is losing his touch. Tell him I want a hamburger.”

Barbara quietly salivated at the luxurious meal as she placed the dome on the tray. “I’ll tell him, Mr. Montgomery.”

“Thank you.” Charles eyed Barbara carefully. “You’re new here.”

She stopped in her tracks. No one had ever spoken to her before. They barked orders at her, but they didn’t speak to her. For a moment, she didn’t know how to respond, so she simply said, “Yes. I’ve been here for a few weeks.”

“Then I trust we’re treating you well.”

Barbara kept her head low. “Very well, sir.”

“Good.” Charles gave Barbara a low smile. Yes, he thought, this creature had something…interesting about her. “Do you have a name or did Dane strip it from you upon your employment here?”

“Barbara,” she said, lightly.

“You know who I am, so there’s no need for all of that. It’s been a pleasure to speak with you, Barbara.” With that, Charles turned his back to her as he continued to smoke his cigar.

Barbara couldn’t believe the twisted nature of her luck. First, Kenny had tracked her down to Kingsport for reasons he hadn’t told her and now she’d finally met Charles Montgomery, IV. Her heart raced with fury, coupled with excitement. Maybe, just maybe, thought Barbara, things would work out after all. They could have worked out before Kenny came to town and now…well, Barbara wasn’t too sure. After all of her hard work, Charles had taken notice of her. That meant more to her than anything. She knew that one day, she would reach her goal, but she had to get Kenny out of her life. Now.

As Barbara sat on her familiar stool as the chef prepared Charles’ hamburger, she began to think of how to get Kenny out of her life. She could divorce him, but that didn’t stop him from being a presence in her life. Barbara considered other options… Most were too extreme, but one…well, maybe that could work. Just maybe…

The chef called out for Barbara to take Charles his meal which only fueled her desire to finish the plan she’d crafted for herself months ago. However, once Barbara walked into the library, Charles was gone. It felt like an awful dream. She stood there unsure of what to do when her cell phone vibrated in her pocket. Even though she wasn’t supposed to look at it, she did. Kenny was texting her demanding to know when she’d be back, how much money she had, and what was for dinner. And there, in the middle of what felt like the worst moment of her life, Barbara decided that the best thing to do was rid Kenny from her life. She couldn’t risk getting Charles and losing him all the same. No. It was time to ensure everything she’d worked so hard for would come true…someday soon…

Kingsport #23

Nicholas Davenport waited for his older brother, Eli, to finish a business call which had already run into their meeting. He glanced around Eli’s impressive office which offered a million-dollar view of San Francisco. It was hard for Nicholas to be impressed, but when he was around Eli, who he considered the most successful of his siblings, Nicholas was always in a state of awe.

“Sorry about that,” Eli muttered as he hung up the phone. “One of my analysts wants to get into crypto, but she’s a lone wolf on this one.”

“I want to get into it,” piped up Nicholas. “I actually wanted to sell my stake in Davenport Technology to put some of the money into new investments, but Mom pushed back at me.”

Eli listened carefully before saying, “I know. Lisa told me.”

Nicholas shifted uneasily in his seat. He should have known their mother would have told Lisa everything. Lisa and Eli had always been the closest set of siblings, which should have registered to Nicholas before this moment. “Oh. So much for privacy.” Nicholas took a deep breath before adding, “I want you to buy my shares in Davenport.”

“I can’t do that,” muttered Eli.

“Why not?!”

“Nick, I hate to this say, but I think Mom may have a point. Davenport is a safe company. Your stock in it is worth $80 million. That’s huge. Most people will never see that kind of money in six lifetimes.”

“Eli, it’s not fair,” pouted Nicholas. “I’m a man in his thirties who isn’t even in control of his finances. Mom is the trustee on my trust. I can’t sell a share of stock or cash out of my market funds without her say-so. It’s ridiculous!”

“I think… Nick, you may not like it, but I think it’s been done for your own good.” Eli watched as Nick folded his arms and averted his gaze. “You’ve had a bunch of careers and no successes. The money and assets in your trust have been a golden goose for you…for the whole family.” Eli gave his little brother a compassionate smile. “I understand your frustrations, but there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“Then this was a wasted trip,” snapped Nick, hotly. “All I want is to be in control of my finances. I’m sick of this family treating me like a child!”

“If you want to start a business or acquire one, you know the family office will give you the money. Do that instead of investing in something you don’t understand just because your friends showed you a meme on Reddit.”

Nick rolled his eyes. “That’s low, Eli.”

“Look, I’m glad you came to me, but I think you need to enjoy the fact that you’re fabulously wealthy without any work on your part. Nick, if you want my advice, talk to the investment manager and ask for a bigger payout from your various investments. Your money should be making at least eight to twelve percent. You have a lot of options, but I don’t think cashing out of Davenport is a prudent move.”

Feeling dejected and powerless, Nicholas thanked his brother for his time, gave him a hug, and left his office. On the way down to the street, Nicholas couldn’t help but feel useless. He called his driver to pick him up as he watched the hoi polloi of San Francisco rush past him on their way to lunch or a meeting. They had a purpose. Nicholas had yet to find his.

He got into the back of the black town car, turned on his Spotify EDM playlist, and closed his eyes as the driver whisked him to the airport hangar. Maybe my life isn’t so bad, thought Nicholas. After all, he had tons of money, could charter planes, and didn’t have to worry about a damn thing. However, in the depths of his mind, Nicholas knew life would get better, if only there were something to do…

“Miss Wilkes, a moment?” Dane Hurley, the Household Manager for the Montgomery Estate, approached Barbara on her stool in the kitchen.

Barbara straightened her back, plastered a smile on her face, and stood to meet Dane. She always put on her best face when he was around. It had taken her some time to work out the power structure among the staff of the Montgomery Estate, but she was now well aware that all of the power rested with Dane Hurley. Mrs. Taplin was a guard dog; Dane held the keys to the kingdom. “I always have a moment for you,” cooed Barbara.

“We’ve been pleased with your work so far. You were an asset during the Independence Day party. We would like to offer you a full-time position on the family’s payroll.”

Barbara’s eyes exploded with sheer excitement. “Oh, thank you!” She threw her arms around Dane’s neck, but quickly corrected herself after realizing her error. “I’ve tried to work so hard here, Dane.”

Dane fixed his collar, cleared his throat, and said, “We’d like for you to answer phones and be an unofficial Girl Friday of sorts to Mrs. Montgomery.”

“The mother or the daughter?” asked Barbara carefully.

“Mrs. Alison Farrell Montgomery. India is referred to as ‘Miss’ Montgomery due to her unmarried state,” Dane said with authoritarian gravitas. “Mrs. Montgomery’s assistant in Paris is unable to come to America for the duration of Mrs. Montgomery’s visit. You will bring her breakfast in the morning, answer her calls in the staff office, and assist her as needed in the house. I will not have to remind you how to act with members of the family. You are to be a professional at all times. If you don’t know the answer to a question, ask me or Mrs. Taplin.” Dane checked his watch. “I have to meet with the head gardener. We can discuss the rest of the details after lunch.”

Barbara didn’t see Dane walk away because she was stunned by this new wave of luck. She’d be in front of the family, not stuck folding linen and hauling beverage carts across the estate during the middle of summer. Barbara would finally be able to see how the other half really lived. What they were really like. She’d finally be able to enact the next portion of her plan. And that fact alone made a twisted smirk across her lips.

“You look like you’ve won the lottery,” said Ada as she walked by. “What’s news?”

“I’ll be assisting Mrs. Montgomery,” Barbara replied, coolly.

Ada’s face feel. “Oh, Barbara,” she said carefully, “that woman will run you out of this house.”

Barbara held her breath for a moment. She didn’t want to react to Ada, who she was now cross with for muddying her happiness. “I don’t think she will,” said Barbara, evenly. “Dane wouldn’t’ve given me the position if he didn’t think I was up for it. I’ll be upstairs, Ada! Upstairs!”

“How many times do I gotta warn you about going upstairs and bein’ around those people? Yeah, they’re rich and they pay well, but they’re not nice people. They’re mean and unkind and don’t care who they hurt in the process,” whispered Ada. “I wouldn’t trust them. Not an inch.”

“Well, that’s you,” sniffed Barbara.

“Girly, I’m looking out for you,” insisted Ada. “Going upstairs with those people… It won’t end well. Never does. The stories I could tell,” Ada said, her voice trailing off.

Barbara folded her arms with marked contempt. She tolerated Ada, but now she was growing annoyed with her instance that Barbara stay in her place and be invisible. Barbara had lived her whole life like that and she wasn’t going to do it anymore! The reason she came to Kingsport was to change her life for the better! No one, not even Ada, would stop her. “Ada, we’ll have to agree to disagree. I’m going upstairs to assist Mrs. Montgomery and there’s nothing you can say to stop me. I’m moving up, Ada. The last thing I want is to be trapped in the bowels of this house for the rest of my life!” spat Barbara.

A heavy feeling of dread filled Ada’s heart as she watched Barbara storm down the staff corridor. In all of her years at the Montgomery Estate, Ada had seen girls just like Barbara who thought rubbing shoulders with the family would be the answer to all of their prayers. More often than not, it was an opening to a portal to hell. Ada had seen it for herself; Barbara was too arrogant to listen. Ada sighed quietly because she knew what lay in wait for Barbara. For the first time in a long time, Ada was content to mind her own business and watch the destruction of Barbara Wilkes…

Kingsport #10

“Miss Wilkes, come in. Mrs. Taplin said you wanted to speak with me. I assume you’ve come here to hand in your notice.”

Barbara gave Dane Hurley, the household manager of the Montgomery Estate, a coy smile as she walked into his office. She deftly sat in a low chair across from his desk. “Oh, I haven’t. Actually, I wanted to thank you for taking me on and giving a chance to prove myself. It’s been an absolute joy.”

Dane couldn’t hide his shock. He was aware that Barbara hadn’t complained or asked for anything to make her job easier. However, in his experience, three weeks in was when reality set in amongst the lowest paid staff members which sent them running for freedom. “I’m glad I’m wrong.”

“You took a chance on me. I’ll always be grateful, Dane.” She cleared her throat. “I did want to know… Oh, I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’d like to know if there’s any chance of possibly being put in the running for another position that suits me…if one were to open up. I do love working here…and I think I’d be an asset to the ongoing running of the estate.”

Dane was taken aback. In all of his years at the Montgomery Estate, few people had ever wanted to move up. Most wanted the distinction of working for this illustrious family on their job resume and that was it. “Miss Wilkes, I appreciate your honesty. At the moment, we don’t have the need for anyone in a front facing role.”

Barbara let her head fall with marked disappointment. “Oh. I knew it was a long shot. Thank you for your time.”

As Barbara stood up, Dane replied, “There may be something…”

She turned to him, her big eyes shimmering. “You don’t have to make an exception for me.”

“I’m not,” said Dane, quickly. “Whenever a member of staff goes on vacation, it be a hassle for me if someone can’t cover their shift. The family doesn’t like it when we aren’t fully staffed. It bothers them. If you’re willing to do it, I can make you a temporary fill-in on an as needed basis. Your pay would remain the same, but we always have a few more maids than we need, but if someone needs to work in Miss Montgomery’s office, then you can easily answer the phone and whatnot.”

“Thank you so much for the opportunity! I’d love to help when I’m needed.” Barbara thanked Dane again before she left his office. Her appreciative smile twisted into a satisfied grin as she walked down the brightly lit corridor. However, her joy was short lived when Ada rounded the corner pushing a large drink’s trolley. “Ada!” exclaimed Barbara “Is everything okay?”

Ada wiped the sweat from her forehead. “The family was supposed to have lunch in town. Now they want to have lunch in the Orangery. Gotta get this there and help Chef. Old Taps is in a frenzy. They’ve been looking for you.”

“Oh. I had to speak to Dane.”

“Oh.” Ada’s eyes fell. “It was nice working with you…”

“No!” corrected Barbara. “I’m still employed. I just wanted to run some things past him.”

“Got it. Well, you’d better see Old Taps and make sure you know what’s going on this afternoon. Word is Will is moving into one of the guest cottages. You’ll have to prep it after we set up lunch. Don’t just stand there, Barbara! We got work to do!”

“Will, are you sure?” Connor sat on Will’s bed as he watched his boyfriend stand by the large windows which overlooked the estate’s English garden. “This is your house, too.”

Will inhaled the scents of primrose and hollyhock which wafted into his bedroom from the garden below. He closed his eyes as he imagined himself anywhere else in the world. It’s not that Will couldn’t afford to rent an island in the Caribbean for as long as he liked, but he had the polo club and his relationship with Connor to consider. He just wanted peace. He couldn’t get that at home. “Connor, I can’t live in this house with India lurking around every corner. I always feel like her eyes are on me. It’s creepy.”

Connor surveyed his boyfriend carefully. He hadn’t told him about India’s little stunt last week, but he felt that it was time that Will knew the truth. On the other hand, Connor realized that now wasn’t the right time. He’d save that little nugget for just the right moment. “Your sister is unhinged on her best day, but you’re safe here. Moving into one of the cottages will only make you more of a target. At least if you’re in the main house, you have the staff to keep an eye on you.”

“That doesn’t solve my problem, Connor. My sister shouldn’t even be here. India is inserting herself into my life to undermine me.”

“Will, that’s a bit much.”

Will turned to Connor with fire in his eyes. “It’s true!! I know her better than any of you!” Will walked over to Connor, sat on the bed, and said, “We had this dog when we were little… It was an old English Setter that Warren named Ponderosa. I loved that dog. Anyway, India didn’t like it. She said it smelled bad even though we had a groomer on staff. One day, the dog doubles over in pain. Two days later, it’s dead. India had been prescribed pain killers when she broke her leg the previous summer. No one ever found those pills. We wound up getting a dog she wanted which terrorized all of us. She’s dangerous, Connor.”

Connor saw the fear in Will’s eyes. This was the first time in his relationship with Will that he saw him terrified. “Will, if it’s that bad, tell your father.”

“I’ve tried. My parents play dumb. Our mother knows what India is capable of, but I don’t think she wants to believe it. Dad just ignores her antics.”

“She broke into my house the other day,” said Connor, softly.

Will let out a guttural cry. “You should have called the police!! I told you she’s dangerous!”

“India didn’t do anything,” lied Connor. “Furthermore, I can’t call the police on Charles Montgomery’s daughter. They’d laugh me out of the station.” Connor laid on the bed and took Will in his arms. “I think she’s very unstable… It’s like her obsession with me is starting all over again.”

“That’s why I want to get out of here. I’d feel safer in the cottage.”

“Let’s go to Maine. We can stay at my cottage…”

“You have work. I have things to do… I should call down to the kitchen for our drinks…”

“Don’t deflect. I think you should go see your mother in Paris. I’m sure she’d love to see her favorite child.”

“Warren’s her favorite child,” stressed Will. “Warren’s everybody’s favorite.”

“You’re my favorite goofball.” Connor gave Will a passionate kiss which led to them making love in the glorious light of day.

From deep inside the servant’s stairwell, India listened as her brother and Connor talked about her and made love. India knew all too well that Connor was thinking about her. She knew that he would always think about her. After all they’d been through, she wouldn’t stop until he was back in her bed. If Will wanted to avoid her, she’d make sure he never came back to town. After hearing Warren and Connor climax, India turned around and vanished down another corridor.

Out of the darkness, Barbara carried the tray with the drinks Connor and Will ordered half an hour ago. She couldn’t place why India Montgomery was lurking in the servant’s stairway, but she was intrigued to have stumbled upon such a titillating scene. Whatever was going on with the glamorous India Montgomery, Barbara knew she may have found an answer to her prayers…

In our next installment, Charles gives India a few hard truths…
