As we enter the second week of “Worlds Apart,” I’m genuinely impressed by each new chapter delves deeper into the characters’ complexities while moving the story along. In full transparence, of the younger set, Ian Greenfield is my favorite. A young gay man trying to navigate the world where he has mastered physical intimacy without ever fully feeling true emotional intimacy with another person. Not just with men, but with his own family, or so he seems to think. Digging deeper into the Greenfields not only expanded Ian’s psyche, but added a new interesting subplot to the story.
Today’s revelation, the secret that Ian and his father Abe Greenfield share, was literally jaw dropping for me. It is something that is rarely done in daytime television soap operas and not with a character of this type. I’m purposefully being vague for those who have not listened yet. What I really appreciated was that it wasn’t a secret for the sake of being a secret. There are reasons I could see why Abe would agree to keep it from Francine based on Ian’s previous comments as well as the impact this has on how Ian has been presented to us so far. This will be a barrier for him, if it isn’t already. Is this the reason that Ian has been hesistant? It’s such a great plot twist that really adds such a poignant level to Ian’s search for happiness.
Abe, the divorced rabbi telling dad jokes, was a wonderful addition to the canvas. He really seems to love his son even when his son is at an age when he doesn’t really know whether he wants to be anyone’s child. He also clearly cares for his ex-wife, Francine, who appears to be a bit of a helicopter mom. Wendy seems to fill the requisite role of wild child, who’s rebellion is grounded in the fact that she wants to live her life by her own rules. The motives of Seth Cohen, Wendy’s boyfriend, in regards to Ian were perplexing, but I suspect they were purposely so. Does Seth harass Ian because he truly despises him or because he is open in a way he cannot be? The twist at the end regarding their dynamic going forward was a great low key situation which has the potential for lots of ongoing domestic drama for weeks to come.
Kudos on the launch of this intriguing new series.
